Working with Strobes

Creative Project

Passion for experimentation

As I have mentioned on previous posts, I typically have not liked working in a studio. I much prefer, or should I say preferred, working outdoors with natural light. But my newest advanced photo class has forced me out of my shell and I am finding the potential of strobes. Here is some of my work taken this week in the studio.

I have to admit that the passion towards using strobes comes from my passion at experimentation. Yes you have that when working outdoors. But in a studio you are completely in charge of every beam of light effecting your image. That level of control adds a large amount of complexity to the images you want to create. You can spend hours just lighting a scene, precisely placing the angle and power of each light to suite your needs until you get it right. I'm not typically a patient person, but when it comes to photography I'm as patient and diligent as could be. For most of these images I set up a relatively standard light setup, with one strobe to the left of the subject and one to the right. One is about a stop or two lower in power than the other to create a nice shadow. In other cases there is just one light facing the subject and one behind the subject to create a white background. There are endless possibilities and I plan to continue exploring each and every one of them.
