Water Drops Revisited

In the past I messed around with photographing water drops, a task of extreme frustration and patience. I decided to revisit this project again last week. The setup is relatively simple, for those wanting to attempt it.

You need a good macro lens in order to get reasonably close to the water drops. You will also need a flash or strobe. In my case I used my Speedlite 550ex and a macro filter on my standard lens. I used a sink and set the faucet to drip onto the back side of a metal ruler. After that it is just a matter of patiently clicking away until you catch that very brief moment in time when the drop explodes on impact. You could very well spend hours doing this only to end up with less than a dozen remotely successful images. But if you are patient you will get the pattern and timing down, improving as you go. Here are some of the results , as well as a photo for motion I messed around with involving studio lights and having it fire multiple times during the exposure.
