We are in unusual times and many of us find ourselves working from home. March happens to be National Crafting Month, so why not utilize your time at home for any of those crafty projects you have been putting off?
I decided to do just that this week by revisiting a project I did in the past, which involved photographing incense on a black background. This go-around, I wanted to see if a humidifier would produce similar results, and it is a great example of how you can make art out of anything. There is likely an unlikely subject to photograph within your eyesight, even as you are reading this article.
Below, you can see the very simple set-up for the first image. I stole my cat's ball toy and tied it to our kitchen light with black thread, letting it dangle over the humidifier. Then all you need is a simple set-up of a black background and an Alien Bee studio light (or any off camera flash will do). The tripod is optional but makes the process easier. In post production I did some basic enhancements to color, contrast, and additional darkening. I placed a new slightly larger circle over the cat toy so it would be perfectly circular and smooth (the cat toy was a bit fuzzy in texture). I know the result isn't up for any awards, but it was certainly a fun project to test out. Below are also two other objects and color variants I experimented with.
Stay safe out there and comment below any projects you have been working on.
